Fostering Change January 2026
Dear Friend,
January is National Mentoring Month, a time to celebrate the power of relationships that guide, support, and empower young people. At Friends of Children, we see the impact of this guidance every day—whether it’s a CASA volunteer advocating for a child’s education or a FOCUS Mentor helping a young adult navigate their future.
As we kick off the new year, we are thrilled to share how our community is growing and how our volunteers are deepening their expertise to better serve our youth.
Mentoring in Action: New Beginnings in Financial Fitness
There is no better way to celebrate National Mentoring Month than by welcoming new participants to our programs. We are excited to announce that five new young adults have officially started their journey with Financial Fitness!
Mentorship isn't just about advice; it’s about providing the tools for independence. These young adults are working hard to master budgeting, credit, and savings to build a stable foundation for their adult lives.
Special Education & Advocacy Series
Through September and October, Alison Greene led a comprehensive workshop series focused on school-based advocacy. Advocates who attended gained specialized knowledge in:
- The New IEP & Special Education for trauma-impacted children.
- Autism & School Supports.
- Transition planning for high school and beyond.
- Navigating school systems effectively.
Navigating Mental Health Systems
In December, we hosted a vital training titled: Navigating the Massachusetts Mental Health System which was attended by 16 volunteers.
FOC Book Club: Learning Together
In October, 16 CASA and Focus volunteers joined our FOC Book Club. The group has begun reading
A Chance in the World by Steve Pemberton.
Volunteers and staff are exploring this powerful story of resilience, which serves as a poignant reminder of why dedicated mentors are so vital.
Be the Change This Month
In honor of National Mentoring Month, we invite you to take the next step in supporting youth in our community. Whether it's through advocacy, life-skills coaching, or financial support, your involvement changes lives.
